Skipton is well known as the 'Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales', a landscape of hills, valleys, rivers, the famous limestone walls, and some of the best walking country in Britain.

Attractions in the Dales

GrassingtonGrassington village in Wharfedale: cobbled streets, interesting shops, Dales Visitor Centre, Upper Wharfedale Museum.

Bolton Abbey Estate, Wharfedale: Bolton Priory was built by the Augustinians, and ruined by Henry VIII.

The estate still belongs to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, but is open to the public. 75 miles of woodland footpaths, the Strid and Barden Tower.

Kettlewell, Upper WharfedaleMalham: natural features of Malham Cove,Gordale Scar, Malham Tarn, and limestone pavements.

Kilnsey Crag, Wharfedale: huge crag with overhangs much used by climbers. Nearby trout farm with fly fishing, pony trekking.

Settle Carlisle RailwaySettle Carlisle Railway: travel the most spectacular train line in England from Skipton Railway station. Don't miss Ribblehead Viaduct.
