About the Chamber of Trade and Commerce

Skipton Chamber of Trade & Commerce was founded in 1897. Its aims are as follows:

  • To provide a platform for members to air their views
  • To provide a united voice on local issues
  • To promote the trading appeal of Skipton
  • To encourage inter-business trading
  • To give business advice to members
  • To organise regular social activities

We meet on a bi-monthly basis to discuss local issues that members have raised. Our members are spread throughout the business community, and our views are often expressed to local authorities, national bodies and our M.P. We also have close links with the local press, radio station and the local police. The Chamber is responsible for organising the very successful Medieval Festivals. We also organise various social events, to encourage members to get to know each other on an informal basis.

In the recent past, we have voiced the traders' objections to Sunday Market Trading, and our Traffic Management sub-committee is in discussions with Craven District Council to find ways to improve congestion and parking facilities in the town. We currently have representation on the Skipton Jubilee Committee, Citizen Advice Bureau, Police Community Service and Liaison Committees and Craven Counts. We also have close links with the Tourist Information Centre.

Bill Houghton retires

Bill Houghton retires after 17 years service

Bill Houghton retired on 8th May 2003 after working hard for the Chamber in various roles including President and Treasurer. His input will be greatly missed but we wish him every happiness with Ruth in Australia (Ruth is his future wife, not the kangaroo)
