About the Chamber of Trade and Commerce
Skipton Chamber of Trade & Commerce was founded in 1897. Its aims are as follows:
-
To provide a platform for members to air their views
-
To provide a united voice on local issues
-
To promote the trading appeal of Skipton
-
To encourage inter-business trading
-
To give business advice to members
-
To organise regular social activities
We meet on a bi-monthly basis to discuss local issues that members have raised. Our members are spread throughout the business community, and our views are often expressed to local authorities, national bodies and our M.P. We also have close links with the local press, radio station and the local police. The Chamber is responsible for organising the very successful Medieval Festivals. We also organise various social events, to encourage members to get to know each other on an informal basis.
In the recent past, we have voiced the traders' objections to Sunday Market Trading, and our Traffic Management sub-committee is in discussions with Craven District Council to find ways to improve congestion and parking facilities in the town.
The Chamber is currently leading a 'BID' (Business Improvement District) for Skipton. We have members on The Skipton Renaissance Town Team, and The Craven Area Committee. We also have close links with the Tourist Information Centre and Skipton Town Council.
